- Get connected to a local plumber. Your call is answered by, or forwarded to, an independent licensed plumbing company that serves your area.

What to Have Ready When You Call
- Your address, or at least your city and ZIP code.
- What is happening: where the water is coming from, or which fixture or drain is the problem.
- Whether you have shut off the water or the water heater.
- Whether you own the home or rent it. Renters should tell the landlord too.
- A phone number where the plumber can call you back.
While You Wait
- If water is leaking, close the main water shutoff.
- If a drain or toilet is backing up, stop using water.
- Keep people and pets away from standing water near outlets.
- If you smell gas, leave the building and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
Before they come out
What to Confirm With the Plumber
A few questions on the phone save surprises later.
When they can arrive
Ask for an arrival window, not just a day. If it is an emergency, say so.
Any visit fee
Ask about service, trip or after-hours fees, and whether they count toward the repair.
Their license
Ask for the license number and look it up with your state. Our state pages link to the right board, for example Texas, California and Florida.
Who pulls the permit
For jobs that need a permit, such as most water heater replacements, the plumber should handle it.

How Same Day Plumber Is Paid
Plumbing companies and call networks pay us for the calls we send them. You pay the plumbing company, and only for work you agree to. Hearing the fees or a quote does not commit you to anything. Our advertiser disclosure has the details.
Afterward
If Something Goes Wrong After the Repair
- Call the plumbing company first. It did the work, billed you and holds any warranty.
- If you cannot settle it, contact the board that licenses plumbers in your state.
- If a page on this site has a wrong fact or an out-of-date rule, tell us and we will fix it.
